Syria holds first public trial to probe coastal region violations

(MENAFN) A national Syrian committee is set to hold its first public trial session Monday to investigate violations committed in the coastal region in March 2025, authorities announced.

Judge Jomaa Aldbis Alanzi, head of the Syrian National Committee for Investigation and Fact-Finding into the Events on the Coast, said the hearings will examine suspects accused of involvement in the coastal abuses, with both local and international media in attendance.

According to a UN Human Rights Office report, the coastal region saw widespread crimes — including murder, torture, looting, and the burning of homes — largely targeting Alawi communities. The violence was attributed to individuals, elements of the interim government’s forces, and remnants of the former Assad regime, resulting in at least 1,400 deaths, most of them civilians.

The UN Commission acknowledged the authorities’ efforts to identify perpetrators and advance accountability.

“These are pivotal moments in the country’s history, reflecting an image of Syria that is laying the foundations of justice and transparency, strengthening confidence in the judicial system, deterring criminals, safeguarding the rights of the accused, and ensuring fair trials,” Alanzi said on US social media platform X.

He highlighted the “tremendous efforts” by the Justice, Interior, and Defense Ministries in enforcing judicial procedures.

“This is of great importance to the families of the victims and to everyone concerned with the course of justice and fairness,” he added.

Alanzi said that implementing the committee’s findings will demonstrate to Syrians and the international community that “we live in a state that upholds justice and enforces the law, and this is the new Syria.”

Since Bashar al-Assad’s ouster in late 2024, the new administration has launched efforts to restore security, introduce political and economic reforms, and promote social cohesion while expanding cooperation with regional and international partners.

Assad, who led Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December, ending the Baath Party’s rule that began in 1963. A transitional administration headed by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was established in January.
