Health Ministry: Gaza Healthcare System Crumbles Despite Ceasefire
(MENAFN) Gaza's medical crisis shows no signs of abating even after a truce with Israel took hold, the enclave's Health Ministry warned Sunday.
Khalil al-Daqran, ministry spokesman, issued a stark assessment in an official statement: "The health situation in the Gaza Strip remains disastrous due to Israel's failure to adhere to the terms of the ceasefire agreement."
Israeli authorities continue restricting pharmaceutical supplies and medical equipment from entering the territory while simultaneously barring wounded Palestinians from seeking treatment beyond Gaza's borders, al-Daqran charged.
The spokesperson revealed that 16,500 sick and injured individuals have been denied exit for overseas medical care—all with completed documentation ready for departure.
Weather conditions have compounded the healthcare emergency. "Medical points set up to provide healthcare services to civilians have gone out of service due to heavy rains, with tents being blown away by strong winds," al-Daqran stated.
He urged global powers to act swiftly, calling for international intervention to expedite the delivery of temporary shelters, prefabricated housing units, and building materials to alleviate conditions for displaced residents throughout the territory.
Since Friday, Gaza has endured harsh winter weather featuring torrential downpours and gale-force winds, resulting in flash flooding that has inundated thousands of makeshift tents housing civilians uprooted by Israel's two-year military campaign. Weather services predict the storm system will dissipate by Sunday evening.
Approximately 2.4 million Palestinian residents in the Gaza Strip remain trapped in catastrophic humanitarian circumstances following the Israeli military operation, which claimed nearly 69,200 lives and wounded more than 170,700 people since October 2023. The Israeli offensive ceased under a ceasefire arrangement that became effective on Oct. 10.
