Ukraine Lands Greek Natural Gas Import Agreement
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Sunday his nation has finalized a natural gas import agreement with Greece aimed at meeting Kyiv's winter energy requirements.
"Today, we have already prepared an agreement with Greece on gas for Ukraine, which will be another gas supply route to secure imports for the winter as much as possible," Zelenskyy stated in a morning video statement posted on US social media platform X.
Confirming existing financing arrangements for gas purchases, Zelenskyy pledged to obtain nearly €2 billion ($2.3 billion) to offset domestic production shortfalls caused by persistent Russian aerial bombardments.
Zelenskyy acknowledged European partners' financial backing for Kyiv's requirements while noting continued coordination with Washington to guarantee complete funding.
"We are creating broad opportunities for winter supplies. In particular, through our Polish partners, and we are working actively with Azerbaijan - and we very much count on long-term contracts. We have discussed this with the president recently," he added.
The president's comments followed overnight strikes across multiple Ukrainian regions, where the air force claimed via Telegram that defensive systems neutralized 139 of 176 various drone types deployed by Russia.
Southwestern Odesa region suffered damage to energy infrastructure including a solar power facility, Governor Oleh Kiper reported.
The Russian Defense Ministry separately claimed its air defenses eliminated 57 Ukrainian drones targeting seven domestic regions, with 23 and 17 intercepted over Samara and Volgograd regions, respectively.
Moscow and Kyiv have exchanged repeated accusations throughout recent weeks regarding attacks on energy installations as winter nears.
Zelenskyy also revealed preparations for a "historic" agreement with France designed to substantially strengthen Kyiv's combat aviation, air defense systems, and additional military capabilities.
"According to the visit schedule, this will take place on Monday. The substance of the visit is good. This is what truly helps Ukraine defend itself and achieve our goals and tasks," Zelenskyy stated, confirming subsequent travel to Spain the following day.
He suggested potential resumption of peace talks with Moscow to conclude the conflict now exceeding three-and-a-half years.
