RSF Sees US Remarks as Threat to Fragile Sudan Ceasefire
(MENAFN) A high-level adviser to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) cautioned that recent statements made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio could jeopardize ongoing efforts to establish a humanitarian pause in a civil conflict that has devastated the nation for more than two years.
Rubio informed journalists on Wednesday that Washington was exerting influence on “relevant parties” providing arms to the RSF, which has been engaged in combat with the Sudanese military since April 2023.
He denounced the dire humanitarian circumstances in Sudan and asserted that the militia was obtaining “external assistance” that must be halted.
In a Thursday announcement, Elbasha Tibeig, adviser to RSF chief Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, described Rubio’s comments as “an ill-advised step… that neither serves the path of the international quartet nor the American initiative regarding the humanitarian truce in Sudan.”
Tibeig argued that the national army could view such remarks “as a political and diplomatic victory,” potentially reinforcing its refusal to accept a peace agreement and intensifying the conflict.
He added on X that “Instead of making statements that show bias, the US administration and the international community must focus their efforts on stopping the flow of weapons coming from Iran and Turkey to the army’s militia, mercenaries and terrorist brigades.”
