Storm Claudia triggers amber warning across England, Wales

(MENAFN) The UK Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for large areas of England and Wales as Storm Claudia approaches, bringing the threat of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding.

The alert, effective from noon Friday until the end of the day, covers regions including Wales, the Midlands, the South West, South East, and East of England. Authorities have warned that flooding is likely in some areas.

Named by Spain’s meteorological service, Storm Claudia has already caused alerts in Spain and Portugal and is currently impacting the Canary Islands. In the UK, the storm is expected to cause travel disruption, power outages, and localized flooding.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said, “Storm Claudia will bring very heavy rainfall to a large swathe of central and southern England and Wales on Friday into Saturday.

This rain will become slow-moving, and some areas could see up to a month’s worth of rain in 24 hours.”

In addition to rain, strong easterly winds are forecast, with gusts of up to 70 mph predicted in parts of northwest Wales and northwest England. Meanwhile, Ireland’s Met Éireann has issued warnings for southeastern regions, expecting significant rainfall through the weekend.

Officials are advising the public to stay updated with local forecasts and travel guidance as conditions worsen.
