(MENAFN) Authorities in Monmouth, South Wales, declared a major incident on Saturday as Storm Claudia caused extensive flooding across the region.

"This is a large-scale incident, and our crews and partners have been working tirelessly through the night and into today to help those affected," said Matt Jones, area manager for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, as stated by reports.

Emergency teams are conducting rescues, evacuations, and welfare checks, while the public is strongly advised to avoid the Monmouth area entirely.

Four severe flood warnings remain active across Wales, indicating a "significant risk to life and significant disruption to the community," with an additional eight warnings and 39 alerts in place. England has issued 81 flood warnings and 187 alerts, and Ireland’s meteorological service has also issued heavy rain warnings, with flooding and power outages reported.

Storm Claudia has affected other countries as well. In southern Portugal, an 85-year-old British woman died at a campsite in Albufeira, and 28 others were injured, including two seriously.

Eleven maritime ports were closed to navigation, and homes across the country suffered flooding.
