Algerian Firefighters Keep Wildfires Under Control

(MENAFN) Algerian firefighters have successfully extinguished all forest fires throughout the country, including a significant blaze in Tipaza province, located west of the capital, Algiers, officials reported on Saturday.

According to the Civil Protection Agency, 55 fires have been suppressed across 14 provinces in western, central, and eastern Algeria since Friday morning.

Authorities noted that five areas remain under observation due to the possibility of flames reigniting, the agency said in an official statement.

In Tipaza, the Civil Protection Agency confirmed that fires were put out in the forests of Boukhlidja, Amarsha, Bouzoula, Shoula, and Douar al-Ikhwa Marsili, while patrols continue in some sections to ensure full containment.

The statement also highlighted that all fires have been controlled in Chlef province in the west; Tizi Ouzou, Medea, Ain Defla, Bouira, and Boumerdes in the center; as well as Bejaia, Jijel, Skikda, Mila, Setif, Souk Ahras, and Tebessa in the east.

Algeria’s meteorological service anticipates a significant drop in temperatures over the coming days, which has contributed to the recent spread of fires. Rainfall is expected on Monday, with snow predicted later in the week.

In recent days, several provinces, particularly Tipaza, experienced sudden and large-scale wildfires, fueled by abnormally hot and dry winds for this season, leading to mass evacuations.

Officials have not revealed the precise cause of the fires, although northern regions have been affected by an unusual heatwave in recent days.
