Cambodia Confirms First Fatality in H5N1 Avian Influenza

(MENAFN) Cambodia's Ministry of Health reported the death of a 22-year-old man from avian influenza on Sunday, marking the sixth fatality in an escalating outbreak that has infected 17 people nationwide this year.

Testing conducted by the National Institute of Public Health confirmed the victim's H5N1 positive status, with results received on November 15, 2025. The man, a resident of Kien Khleang village in Chroy Changvar district within the capital Phnom Penh, succumbed to the highly pathogenic virus.

Health officials have launched an immediate epidemiological investigation to trace the infection's origin and identify all individuals who may have had direct exposure to the deceased. Authorities are actively screening suspected cases and monitoring contacts to contain potential community spread.

Preventive measures are underway: the antiviral medication Tamiflu (oseltamivir) has been distributed to those with direct contact with the victim, according to the statement. The drug works to inhibit bird flu transmission among exposed populations.

H5N1 influenza typically circulates among infected poultry but poses sporadic spillover risk to humans through direct contact. Clinical manifestations include fever, cough, runny nose, and severe respiratory illness. The Ministry of Health emphasized that avian influenza remains a significant public health threat, urging residents to exercise heightened precautions and abstain from consuming diseased or deceased fowl.

With six deaths recorded among 17 confirmed human cases this year, Cambodia faces mounting pressure to contain further transmission as seasonal factors intensify bird flu circulation.
