Fung-wong, Kalmaegi Leave Hundreds Missing in Philippines

(MENAFN) The combined death toll from Typhoon Fung-wong and Typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines has reached 259, with 114 individuals still reported missing nationwide, according to state-run media.

Last week, Typhoon Kalmaegi hit Cebu province and multiple areas in the Central Visayas region, resulting in 232 fatalities, 112 missing persons, and 523 injuries.

More than 4.1 million people were affected, a news agency reported, citing the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The storm caused extensive damage to roads and infrastructure, impacting nearly 135,000 homes, of which 20,510 were completely destroyed.

The more recent Typhoon Fung-wong, which made landfall on Friday night and left the Philippine Area of Responsibility early Tuesday, claimed 27 lives, injured 36, and left two missing.

Authorities reported that Fung-wong affected over 4.4 million people across 15 regions, including Central Luzon, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and Western Visayas.

Over 800,000 displaced individuals are taking refuge in roughly 11,800 evacuation centers scattered throughout the impacted regions.

The typhoon also caused significant damage to roads and bridges, while disruptions to electricity and water services continue in numerous towns and cities.

The Education Department stated that nearly 3,000 schools suffered damage from the storm, with 1,238 of them being completely destroyed.
