UN says Central Mediterranean migrant deaths exceed one thousand
(MENAFN) The UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported Wednesday that the number of migrant deaths in the Central Mediterranean this year has surpassed 1,000, with the toll continuing to rise.
In the latest tragedy, an inflatable boat capsized off the coast of Libya on Nov. 8, leaving more than 40 people feared dead. The vessel had departed from Zuwara on Nov. 3 carrying 49 migrants—47 men and two women. Rough seas caused engine failure six hours into the journey. Only seven men survived after drifting at sea for six days: four from Sudan, two from Nigeria, and one from Cameroon. The remaining 42 are presumed dead, including 29 Sudanese, eight Somalis, three Cameroonians, and two Nigerians.
The IOM provided emergency medical care, food, and water to the survivors upon arrival and emphasized the ongoing risks migrants face along the Central Mediterranean route.
The agency called for strengthened regional cooperation, expanded safe and legal migration pathways, and more effective search and rescue operations to prevent further loss of life.
