Portugal Reports Nearly Thirty Mpox Cases in Past Three Months
(MENAFN) Portuguese health authorities reported on Tuesday that 29 mpox cases have been confirmed over the past three months, with 10 cases in August, three in September, and 16 in October.
"In recent weeks, an increase in the number of cases has been observed, suggesting a possible intensification of transmission, although there is still no evidence of a new epidemic peak," the Directorate-General of Health (DGS) and the National Health Institute Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA) told a broadcaster.
Highlighting that October’s figures surpass the monthly average of roughly 11 cases, DGS and INSA emphasized that understanding this rise still hinges on laboratory confirmations and the trend of reported cases in the coming weeks.
The World Health Organization (WHO) echoed concerns in an October report, noting that all known mpox strains continue to circulate. WHO warned that sustained community transmission could occur if outbreaks are not swiftly controlled. The agency also reported that a newly identified clade, clade Ib, has now extended beyond Africa.
