Trump Threatens One Billion Dollar Lawsuit Against BBC

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has issued a threat to pursue legal action against the BBC for $1 billion, according to media coverage.

He is insisting on the withdrawal of a documentary that, he claims, "unethically edited" a speech he delivered prior to the storming of the US Capitol in Washington, DC, in 2021.

The state-funded British broadcaster issued an apology on Monday following the resignations of two senior executives—Director-General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness—amid questions about the impartiality of the editing in the BBC Panorama documentary titled ‘Trump: A Second Chance?’.

The documentary, which aired shortly before last November’s US election, combined segments of Trump’s speech in a way that suggested he was encouraging the January 6 riot by telling supporters he would join them to “fight like hell” at the Capitol.

In a letter dated November 9, Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito, demanded a full retraction, a formal apology, and financial compensation, setting a 10pm UK deadline on Friday, warning that failure to comply would result in legal proceedings.

The BBC said it would examine the letter and “respond directly in due course.”

On Monday, BBC Chairman Samir Shah issued an official apology in a letter to Parliament’s Culture, Media, and Sport Committee, admitting that the edited footage created the “impression of a direct call for violent action.”

He concluded, “The BBC would like to apologize for that error of judgement.”
