Italy Vows Proactive Stance in Middle East Reconstruction

(MENAFN) Italy is positioning itself as a key player in Middle East reconstruction efforts, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced Wednesday during the G7 Foreign Ministers Summit in Canada.

Speaking to a news agency on the summit's sidelines, Tajani outlined his nation's expanding regional involvement following the recent Gaza ceasefire. The gathering of foreign ministers, which launched Tuesday, has placed Mediterranean stability at the forefront of diplomatic discussions.

"Italy's commitment in the Middle East will be important, we'll see what kind of commitment it will be: it could be training the Palestinian police, it could be making a strong contribution to the civil administration," Tajani told a news agency on the sidelines of the summit.

The foreign minister stressed Italy's proactive stance, pointing to a €60 million ($69 million) financial commitment already underway for reconstruction initiatives. Rome has already disbursed an initial €5 million installment several months prior, demonstrating early action on its pledges.

"We must ensure that the truce in Gaza is consolidated and that all the aid and food supplies reach the population," Tajani added.

Italy is deploying diplomatic personnel across the region to secure a prominent role in post-conflict planning. An Italian envoy, having already conducted missions to Jordan, Ramallah, Israel, and Egypt, will travel to the United States to coordinate reconstruction strategy, Tajani confirmed. The objective is ensuring Italy remains "a protagonist" in both rebuilding operations and subsequent peace negotiations.

The Gaza truce, which became effective October 10, stems from a 20-point framework presented by U.S. President Donald Trump. The agreement's initial phase involves exchanging Israeli hostages for Palestinian detainees, while subsequent stages envision Gaza's reconstruction and implementing governance structures excluding Hamas.

Sudan Crisis Draws Italian Humanitarian Response
Addressing the escalating humanitarian disaster in Sudan, Tajani expressed hope for de-escalation between warring factions.

"We hope to reach a ceasefire between the two sides," Tajani said regarding the Sudanese army's confrontation with the Rapid Support Forces.

"Italy is organizing significant aid: a plane and a ship with supplies for children will arrive in Port Sudan before Christmas," he added.

Sudan has endured catastrophic violence since April 15, 2023, when hostilities erupted between government forces and the RSF. Multiple regional and international mediation attempts have failed to halt the bloodshed, which has claimed thousands of lives and forced millions from their homes.
