Mexicans Report Human Rights Abuses in US ICE Detention

(MENAFN) Mexican citizens have lodged 30 formal complaints with the United Nations concerning alleged human rights violations against migrants held by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Tuesday.

Speaking at her routine press briefing, Sheinbaum highlighted that Mexico’s consular offices in the US have been actively providing support and resources to help Mexicans secure legal representation.

The president also denounced the discrimination and criminalization faced by Mexican immigrants living and working in the United States.

“Beyond the fact that we reject discrimination and any treatment that violates—or allegedly violates—human rights, (Mexican immigrants) must be recognized for their work, for their contributions, for Mexico of course, but also for the United States,” she stated.

Mexico’s Foreign Ministry further reported that at least 10 Mexican citizens passed away while in ICE custody between January and October of this year.

Sheinbaum noted that approximately 40 million individuals of Mexican descent reside in the United States, with nearly 90% living there legally.

“They sustain the US economy. They sustain agriculture, construction and the service sector,” she stressed, emphasizing their vital role.

Sheinbaum also mentioned that remittances sent by Mexican nationals have remained consistent during US President Donald Trump’s administration, indicating that the total amount sent back home this year is on par with the figures recorded in 2022.
