Sudanese rights group claims RSF transferred detainees to South Darfur

(MENAFN) A Sudanese human rights organization alleged on Tuesday that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) moved hundreds of civilians and captured soldiers from El-Fasher in North Darfur to detention facilities in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur.

According to the group, the Emergency Lawyers, “the RSF transferred hundreds of civilians and military prisoners from El-Fasher to detention centers in (Nyala) after taking control of the city, in an arbitrary detention that violates international law and the principles of criminal justice.”

The organization added that the facilities are overcrowded and in poor condition, resulting in deteriorating health among inmates, with some dying due to hunger, mistreatment, and lack of medical care.

It emphasized, “separating civilians from military prisoners is essential, as each group enjoys different rights; civilians must be protected from any collective punishment, while military prisoners are entitled to humane treatment, medical care and guarantees specified under the Third Geneva Convention.”

The group called for “the immediate release of civilians and the rejection of any trials or charges,” urging the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to “fulfill its role in visiting detention centers, ensuring the safety of detainees, guaranteeing respect for international humanitarian law, and providing the necessary legal and humanitarian assistance.”

Sudanese authorities and the RSF had not responded to the accusations at the time of reporting.

Reports indicate that the RSF took control of El-Fasher on Oct. 26, committing massacres according to local and international sources. With the fall of the city, the RSF now controls all five Darfur states in the west, while the army retains most areas in the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum.

Darfur represents roughly one-fifth of Sudan’s territory, although the majority of the country’s 50 million population resides in army-held regions.

Since April 15, 2023, fighting between the army and RSF has persisted despite regional and international mediation attempts, resulting in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions.
