Pakistani Forces Kill Five Attackers Behind Military College Assault

(MENAFN) Pakistani security personnel have killed all five attackers, including one suicide bomber, following an assault on a military-administered educational institution in the country's northwest, a defense source confirmed Wednesday.

The counterterrorism response has been completed, with personnel now conducting a comprehensive sweep of the campus to detect and neutralize any hidden improvised explosive devices, the source informed media under anonymity requirements for media communications.

Militants launched the Monday assault on Cadet College located in Wana, South Waziristan district, positioned near the Afghan frontier, by driving a bomb-laden vehicle through the institution's primary entrance.

Initial explosions at the gate killed two assailants, including the suicide operative, while three additional attackers penetrated the campus perimeter.

Military personnel successfully evacuated over 600 individuals—encompassing cadets, faculty members, and non-teaching employees—from the premises before launching tactical operations against the remaining militants trapped within the administration building, according to the defense source.

The security official said militants attempted a repeat of the 2014 Peshawar school attack, but security forces prevented the tragedy.

A devastating precedent occurred on Dec. 16, 2014, when six Taliban operatives invaded the Army Public School Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province's capital, massacring approximately 150 victims, with more than 130 being students.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Khalifa Mansoor group had claimed responsibility for the attack. Mansoor was later killed in a US drone attack in eastern Afghanistan in October 2017.
