Syria Announces 30 Percent Reduction in Fuel Prices
(MENAFN) Syrian energy officials declared Tuesday a 30-percent reduction in domestic fuel costs designed to alleviate economic strain on residents before winter arrives, representing a component of comprehensive energy sector restructuring.
The price decrease stems from elevated domestic petroleum output and falling international crude valuations, Ahmad Suleiman, director of communication at the energy authorities, told a state TV channel.
The revised tariff structure sets diesel at 0.75 U.S. dollars per liter, gasoline at 0.85 dollars per liter, and residential gas cylinders at 10.5 dollars per unit, authorities confirmed in an official statement.
The adjustment appears calculated to calm citizen anxiety following recent electricity rate increases.
Earlier this month, energy regulators implemented a four-tier pricing framework that elevated power charges by as much as sixtyfold for certain households.
The electricity overhaul aims to minimize government deficits and enhance distribution dependability amid substantial natural gas requirements for electricity generation, consuming nearly 10 million cubic meters of gas every day.
