Mike Johnson to swear in Arizona Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva

According to reports, US House Speaker Mike Johnson will administer the oath around 4 p.m. local time (2100 GMT), his office announced Tuesday. Grijalva won the seat previously held by her late father, but her induction was postponed despite growing pressure from Democratic lawmakers and a lawsuit filed by Arizona’s attorney general urging Johnson to act.
Johnson defended the delay, explaining that Grijalva’s Sept. 23 election took place while the House was adjourned amid the government shutdown. He said the swearing-in would occur once Congress reconvened in Washington.
In a video message posted on social media, Grijalva said she “almost can’t believe it’s true” after waiting seven weeks to take office, emphasizing that “one person can’t silence the voices of 813,000 people.” She denounced the delay as political maneuvering and pledged to work toward ensuring “this can never happen again.”
