Egyptian FM visits Sudan amid ongoing army-RSF conflict

(MENAFN) Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty traveled to Sudan on Tuesday to engage with senior officials as the country continues to face violent clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

According to official statements, Abdelatty’s visit aims to address the growing humanitarian crisis and discuss measures to achieve a comprehensive solution that safeguards Sudan’s stability and security. The talks in Port Sudan are also expected to explore ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Cairo and Khartoum.

Sudan has been embroiled in a deadly conflict since April 2023, leaving tens of thousands dead and millions displaced. On October 26, the RSF captured El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, and carried out massacres, according to reports.

Egypt has been a key supporter of the Sudanese government and has participated in international mediation efforts to negotiate a humanitarian truce. With the RSF now controlling all five Darfur states in western Sudan, the army retains authority over most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum. While Darfur comprises roughly a fifth of Sudan’s territory, the majority of the nation’s 50 million residents live in areas under army control.
