Typhoon Fung-Wong Claims Lives Across Philippines

(MENAFN) At least 18 individuals have died and two others are still missing after Typhoon Fung-Wong unleashed heavy rainfall and widespread flooding across the Philippines, prompting the evacuation of over 2 million residents, local media reported Tuesday.

According to a media outlet, more than 2.4 million people have been impacted across 15 regions, including Central Luzon, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and Western Visayas.

Authorities stated that upwards of 800,000 people who were forced from their homes are currently taking refuge in approximately 11,800 evacuation centers scattered throughout the affected regions.

The fatalities were confirmed in the Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Bicol, and Western Visayas.

Additionally, two individuals remain unaccounted for, and 28 others sustained injuries, officials reported.

Floodwaters persist in many areas, with 267 locations across eight regions still submerged. The Bicol Region experienced the most severe flooding with 161 areas underwater, followed by Calabarzon with 39, and Central Luzon with 36.

The typhoon also caused damage to roads and bridges, while interruptions to electricity and water supply continue to affect numerous towns and cities.

Typhoon Fung-Wong, referred to locally as Typhoon Uwan, left the Philippine Area of Responsibility early Tuesday, though the state weather bureau warned it could return later this week.
