(MENAFN) A massive landslide struck the remote Chilas district in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region on Tuesday, burying multiple vehicles and prompting an urgent rescue operation. The region, which borders China, is known for its rugged mountainous terrain, making it particularly vulnerable to such natural disasters.

“The incident occurred in the remote Chilas district in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, which borders China,” Faizullah Firaq, a regional government spokesman, told reporters.

Officials reported that at least two vehicles were swept into a river by the landslide, while four additional vehicles were buried under debris.

“No casualty was immediately confirmed,” Firaq added, noting that rescue teams had been dispatched to the affected area. Local authorities are racing against time to reach anyone who may be trapped and assess the full extent of the damage.

Gilgit-Baltistan has a history of landslides, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt, which can destabilize slopes and trigger sudden, deadly slides. Residents and travelers in the region are often advised to exercise extreme caution during such conditions.

Emergency services continue to monitor the situation closely, and authorities have urged people to avoid the area until the landslide’s impact is fully evaluated.
