Sudan’s governor says army to advance west to drive RSF out of Darfur

(MENAFN) Sudan’s military is preparing to advance westward to drive the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) out of Darfur, following orders from army chief and Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, a regional governor said Tuesday.

Darfur Governor Mini Arko Minnawi pledged to move west under Burhan’s instructions “to liberate all Sudan, reaching the furthest point in Um Dafuq,” a border town in South Darfur state.

“No one can erase the traces of the crimes committed by RSF leaders,” Minnawi was quoted as saying by a local media organization portal while addressing army forces in Khartoum.

He dismissed RSF claims that they had arrested Abu Lulu — a commander accused of executing hundreds of civilians in El-Fasher — as “a political theater that will not change the facts.”

According to an Egyption channel, the Sudanese army shelled an RSF military camp on Tuesday in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state. There was no immediate comment from the RSF.

The developments came as Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty arrived in Sudan for talks with officials in Khartoum. Egypt remains a key backer of the Sudanese government.

On Oct. 26, the RSF seized control of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, where local and international groups accused the force of committing massacres. With that capture, the RSF consolidated control over all five Darfur states, while the Sudanese army holds most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital.

Darfur constitutes roughly one-fifth of Sudan’s land area, though most of the country’s 50 million citizens live in territories controlled by the national army.
