Starmer, UAE president hold talks on Sudan, Gaza over phone call
(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Monday to discuss regional issues and ways to strengthen bilateral ties, Downing Street said.
Starmer emphasized the value of closer UK-UAE cooperation across security, defense, trade, economy, and cultural matters, highlighting mutual benefits. The leaders also addressed Sudan’s ongoing civil war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has persisted since 2023 and caused thousands of deaths, mass displacement, and one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The UK leader described the situation in Sudan as “appalling” and said London is urging all parties to cease hostilities and pursue peace. Both Starmer and Sheikh Mohamed agreed to stay in contact to support political solutions and end the violence.
Turning to Gaza, the leaders stressed the importance of implementing the US-brokered peace deal, including disarming Hamas, and maintaining the ceasefire to enable long-term stability in the region. They agreed to continue discussions in the near future.
