Egypt Begins First Phase of Parliamentary Elections
(MENAFN) Egypt on Monday initiated the first stage of its parliamentary elections to select members of the House of Representatives, as reported by local outlets.
According to a state-operated channel, nearly 63 million registered voters are expected to participate in casting their ballots to elect 568 representatives in two separate phases.
The initial phase of the voting process is taking place over two consecutive days across the governorates of Alexandria, Assiut, Aswan, Beheira, Beni Suef, Fayoum, Giza, Luxor, Matrouh, Minya, New Valley, Qena, Red Sea, and Sohag.
These elections are being conducted within 5,606 subcommittees distributed over 70 electoral constituencies.
In total, 1,287 candidates are contending for seats — comprising 1,143 independents competing under the individual candidacy system and 142 running through the party-list framework.
Egypt’s House of Representatives consists of 596 seats, including 568 elected members — 284 chosen via the closed-list system and another 284 through individual contests — along with 28 members directly designated by a presidential decree.
The results for this first phase are scheduled to be made public on Nov. 18.
The Interior Ministry stated that an extensive security strategy has been implemented to safeguard the polling stations during the electoral process.
Voting for Egyptians residing abroad took place on Nov. 7–8 in embassies and consulates located in 117 nations, as confirmed by the government’s media center.
The second phase of the elections will be conducted on Nov. 21–22 for expatriates and on Nov. 24–25 for residents in the remaining 13 governorates. Results for this stage are expected to be announced on Dec. 2.
