(MENAFN) Thailand has announced the suspension of a recently signed peace agreement with Cambodia, a deal that US President Donald Trump had claimed to help facilitate. The move comes after four Thai soldiers were injured by a landmine while patrolling the border, with one soldier reportedly losing a foot in the blast. Authorities in Bangkok allege the mine was newly planted.

The peace agreement had been finalized last month in Malaysia following a five-day flare-up in a long-standing colonial-era border dispute. Trump attended the signing ceremony and took credit for brokering the accord.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul explained the suspension: “What happened demonstrates hostility towards Thailand and a continued security threat... What we have been pursuing must now be put on hold until clarity is restored.”

Defense Minister Nattapon Narkphanit stated that the patrol route had been regularly monitored, suggesting that the mine must have been freshly laid. “This is an act by a Cambodia that does not observe the declaration signed on October 26, 2025,” he said.

In response, Bangkok has sent a formal protest to Phnom Penh and paused plans to repatriate 18 Cambodian soldiers later this week, a step that had been part of the peace deal’s implementation.

Trump has previously asserted that he helped end conflicts in several countries since the start of his second term, including Cambodia-Thailand, Kosovo-Serbia, Congo-Rwanda, Israel-Iran, Egypt-Ethiopia, Armenia-Azerbaijan, Pakistan-India, and more recently Israel-Hamas in Gaza.

However, some of these disputes never escalated into active fighting, and New Delhi has denied any external mediation in its ceasefire with Islamabad. Despite this, Trump has argued that his efforts merit a Nobel Peace Prize.
