Over one thousand trucks get stuck at Belarus-Lithuania border
(MENAFN) Belarus announced on Monday that more than 1,100 trucks remain stuck at its border with Lithuania following a unilateral closure imposed by Vilnius.
The Belarusian Foreign Ministry stated on social media platform X that vehicles “are being moved to safe parking zones,” and added that, for “humanitarian considerations, drivers are given the opportunity to leave.”
The ministry attributed the disruption to Lithuania, saying “all losses stem from Vilnius’s politicized actions.”
Lithuania earlier this week closed additional border crossings with Belarus, citing security concerns related to Russia’s war in Ukraine and Minsk’s close ties with Moscow. Tensions between Belarus and EU neighbors have intensified in recent weeks. Last month, Lithuania shut parts of the border, accusing Belarus of facilitating cigarette smuggling via hot-air balloons.
In response, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree on Oct. 31 banning Polish and Lithuanian trucks from operating in Belarus until the end of 2027.
