Belarus Reports Trucks Stranded After Lithuania’s Border Closure
(MENAFN) Belarus announced on Monday that more than 1,100 trucks remain stuck at its frontier with Lithuania after the latter implemented a unilateral shutdown.
According to the Foreign Ministry, in a message posted on US social media platform X, the vehicles "are being moved to safe parking zones," and drivers are, for "humanitarian considerations," being allowed to leave.
The ministry attributed the disruption to Lithuania, claiming that "all losses stem from Vilnius’s politicized actions."
Earlier this week, Vilnius revealed it was shutting additional border crossings with Belarus, citing security risks connected to Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine and Minsk’s relationship with Moscow.
Tensions between Belarus and its European Union neighbors have intensified in recent weeks.
Lithuania closed the border last month, accusing Minsk of facilitating cigarette smuggling via hot-air balloons.
On Oct. 31, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, in a retaliatory move, signed a decree barring Polish and Lithuanian trucks from entering Belarus until the end of 2027.
