COP30 Summit Opens in Brazil’s Belem
(MENAFN) Brazil's Belem hosted the launch of the 30th United Nations climate summit on Monday, with local officials describing the gathering as a critical effort to restore climate action to the forefront of global diplomacy.
The conference, officially designated COP30, kicked off with remarks from COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev, who urged participants to fulfill commitments made during last year's summit in Baku, Azerbaijan's capital.
Andre Correa do Lago, serving as COP30 President, expressed gratitude toward Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for his appointment while stressing the summit's mandate to deliver actionable outcomes.
Global living standards can continue advancing despite recent challenges, Correa do Lago asserted. "Science, education, culture are the path that we have to follow," he said.
He characterized multilateralism as the essential framework for combating climate disruption.
Conference organizers anticipate debates spanning climate adaptation strategies, equitable energy transitions, and execution of the Paris Agreement's comprehensive stocktake mechanism.
Registration data from the COP30 presidency confirms participation from delegations representing more than 190 countries and territories for the proceedings, scheduled to conclude November 21.
