Finland Sees Resurgence in COVID Cases as 200 Reported Weekly

(MENAFN) Finland is witnessing a resurgence in COVID-19 infections, with health authorities documenting 200 laboratory-confirmed cases weekly amid a broader wave of respiratory illnesses sweeping the nation, a broadcaster reported Monday.

A specialist for the Institute for Health and Welfare, THL, said the case numbers increased in autumn, with around 200 lab-confirmed cases recorded per week in recent weeks.

"These are laboratory confirmed cases, and just the tip of the iceberg (in terms of actual infections). The majority of people (with Covid) are at home. It can be said that coronavirus infections are spreading throughout the country," Niina Ikonen said.

Despite the uptick, current infection rates remain significantly below last year's autumn figures, when approximately 1,000 laboratory-verified cases were logged each week—representing an 80% decline year-over-year.

"There is a large number of different respiratory viruses circulating at the moment," Ikonen added.

Health officials emphasize that confirmed case counts represent only a fraction of true community transmission, as most infected individuals recover at home without seeking formal testing or medical intervention.
