Egypt, Qatar hold talks on Gaza truce, Sudan’s situation

(MENAFN) Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held discussions with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Sunday, focusing on recent progress toward a Gaza ceasefire and the urgent need for a humanitarian truce in Sudan, according to reports.

The talks, conducted over the phone, addressed current developments surrounding US President Donald Trump’s Gaza proposal, which serves as the foundation for the existing ceasefire framework.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the truce in Gaza and emphasized adherence to the resolutions of the Sharm el-Sheikh peace summit. The officials also highlighted the importance of maintaining a unified Palestinian political process and safeguarding the territorial integrity of Palestine by linking the Gaza Strip with the occupied West Bank.

They further stressed the necessity of defining the responsibilities and scope of an international stabilization force to operate in Gaza under the ceasefire agreement.

The initial phase of the truce came into effect on Oct. 10 as part of Trump’s 20-point plan, which also includes provisions for Gaza’s reconstruction and the establishment of a new administrative framework without Hamas involvement.

Since October 2023, Israeli attacks on Gaza have claimed the lives of more than 69,000 people, most of them women and children, and wounded over 170,600 others, according to humanitarian reports.

During their conversation, Abdelatty and Sheikh Mohammed also turned to the escalating crisis in Sudan, voicing support for the country’s sovereignty and stability. They called for the implementation of a humanitarian ceasefire and the creation of secure corridors to facilitate the flow of aid to affected populations.

Reports indicate that on Oct. 26, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, and carried out large-scale attacks on civilians. The incident has raised fears that the conflict could further divide the country.

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating war between the national army and the RSF. Despite multiple regional and international mediation efforts, the fighting continues, leaving thousands dead and forcing millions from their homes.
