Rohingya Boat Overturn Leaves at Least Thirteen Dead
(MENAFN) At least 13 people have died and 13 others rescued after a boat carrying dozens of migrants, mostly Rohingya, capsized Monday near the maritime boundary between Malaysia and Thailand.
Malaysia’s state-run news agency reported that seven bodies were recovered by Malaysian authorities, while Thai officials retrieved six more.
"We expect to discover more victims today, as sea current patterns in the search area indicate that they are drifting towards Malaysian waters," Maritime 1st Adm. Romli Mustafa told reporters Monday.
He added that the search and rescue operation has been expanded to cover more than 250 square nautical miles.
The migrants reportedly left Myanmar aboard a large vessel carrying around 300 people before transferring to three smaller boats. One of these smaller boats later capsized, while the fates of the other two remain unknown, according to media reports on Sunday.
The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim minority in Myanmar, face systemic abuse, discrimination, and statelessness, prompting many to flee the country.
Myanmar has been engulfed in civil war since a 2021 military coup, with ongoing ethnic clashes further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
