Thailand Halts Peace Agreement with Cambodia After Landmine Explosion

(MENAFN) Thailand on Monday suspended its recent peace agreement with Cambodia following a serious landmine explosion that wounded Thai soldiers in the Si Sa Ket border province.

"All operations under the Joint Declaration on Thai-Cambodian Relations, signed in Kuala Lumpur on October 26th, must be halted immediately," said Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, according to a Thai broadcaster.

The peace accord, signed on Oct. 26 in Kuala Lumpur in the presence of US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, marked a high-profile effort to stabilize the long-disputed border.

The two nations had previously agreed to an unconditional ceasefire on July 28 at a trilateral meeting hosted by Anwar, after weeks of military confrontations.

"The hostility we hoped would subside clearly has not. Following this morning’s incident, cooperation cannot continue for now," Anutin said.

The incident occurred during a morning patrol in Si Sa Ket, leaving two Thai soldiers injured. One lost his right foot, while the other sustained chest injuries.

Speaking to reporters, Anutin emphasized that future engagement with Cambodia will proceed only if it aligns with Thailand's national interests.

Defense Minister Gen Nattaphon Nakpanich announced that "formal protests will be filed right away."

He added, "As for the matter of prisoners of war, that will be put on hold for now. If it turns out that this was intentional, there will be more serious consequences."

Government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat said it is "too early to say" whether the suspension of the agreement is permanent. "Once the protest has been filed, we will assess our next steps," he added.

Meanwhile, Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration on Peace, Cooperation and Prosperity, as reported by media.

Lt. Gen. Rath Dararoth, secretary of state at the National Defense Ministry, stated that Phnom Penh remains committed "to implementing its obligations and expressed readiness to work closely with Thailand for the mutual benefit of both countries and peoples."
