Egypt begins first phase of parliamentary elections

(MENAFN) Egypt commenced the initial stage of its parliamentary elections on Monday, as stated by reports, aiming to select members for the House of Representatives.

Nearly 63 million eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots to elect 568 representatives in a two-phase process, according to official statements.

The first stage is scheduled over two days and covers 14 provinces: Alexandria, Assiut, Aswan, Beheira, Beni Suef, Fayoum, Giza, Luxor, Matrouh, Minya, New Valley, Qena, Red Sea, and Sohag.

Voting is being conducted across 5,606 subcommittees distributed within 70 electoral districts.

A total of 1,287 candidates are competing in this round, with 1,143 running as independents under the individual system and 142 participating via party lists.

Egypt’s 596-seat House of Representatives comprises 568 elected members—split evenly between the closed-list system and the individual system—while 28 seats are filled by direct presidential appointment.

The results of this first phase are expected to be announced on Nov. 18.

“The Interior Ministry affirmed that a comprehensive security plan was applied to protect the polling stations,” according to official reports.

Egyptian citizens living abroad had the opportunity to vote earlier, on Nov. 7-8, at embassies and consulates across 117 countries, as stated by reports.

The second phase will occur on Nov. 21-22 for expatriates and on Nov. 24-25 for voters in the remaining 13 provinces, with outcomes expected to be released on Dec. 2.

These elections follow the recent Senate polls, which selected members of the upper chamber of parliament.

The House of Representatives remains a central institution in Egypt’s political system, holding legislative authority and oversight responsibilities in line with the constitution. The current House, elected in late 2020, is set to complete its five-year term in January 2026.
