African Union Chair Voices Concern Over Crisis in Mali

(MENAFN) African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf voiced deep concern on Sunday regarding the rapidly worsening security situation in Mali.

According to reports, terrorist groups have enforced crippling blockades, disrupted access to critical supplies, and severely aggravated humanitarian conditions for civilians.

In an official statement, Youssouf denounced the lethal attacks that have claimed the lives of innocent civilians and intensified instability across the affected regions.

Expressing his solidarity with both the government and people of Mali, Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union’s steadfast commitment to promoting peace, security, and development throughout the Sahel region.

He also strongly criticized recent kidnappings, including the abduction of three Egyptian nationals, urging for their immediate and unconditional release.

Youssouf emphasized that these acts represent serious breaches of human rights and international humanitarian law.

The Chairperson called for a "robust, coordinated and coherent international response to counter terrorism and violent extremism in the Sahel."

He stressed the need for improved collaboration, intelligence sharing, and sustained assistance to nations affected in the region.

Finally, Youssouf reiterated the African Union’s full readiness to support Mali, along with other Sahel countries, in their pursuit of lasting peace and stability.
