Rising Insecurity Forces Thousands to Flee North Kordofan
(MENAFN) Around 2,000 additional civilians have been forced to leave the town of Bara and several surrounding villages in Sudan’s North Kordofan state over the past three days due to escalating insecurity, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Sunday.
In a release, the IOM noted that its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) indicated the recent displacement occurred between Nov. 7 and 9, amid assaults by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The UN agency further stated that the latest exodus follows a sequence of attacks in Bara, Sheikan, Rahad, Um Rawaba, and Um Damm Haj Ahmed, which have prompted roughly 38,990 people to seek refuge since Oct. 26.
Since April 15, 2023, the Sudanese army and the RSF have been engaged in an armed conflict that regional and international efforts have so far failed to resolve.
The fighting has resulted in thousands of fatalities and displaced millions of individuals.
