Typhoon Fung-Wong Forces Mass Evacuations in Philippines
(MENAFN) At least two individuals lost their lives while approximately 1.4 million people were evacuated as a precautionary measure as Typhoon Fung-Wong struck the Philippines on Monday.
"As for casualties, there were reports, but it is subject to validation," Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, an official with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), informed reporters.
One fatality resulted from drowning, while another occurred due to a structural collapse triggered by the typhoon, locally referred to as Uwan, in northern Luzon. Additionally, two people sustained injuries.
The typhoon completely destroyed nearly 100 houses, and roughly 1,000 others were damaged to varying degrees.
Power outages affected close to three million households on Sunday as the storm raged. The National Electrification Administration stated on Monday that evaluations were still underway, as reported by a news agency.
On Monday, around 50 transmission lines remained out of service due to the storm’s impact.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration downgraded Fung-Wong from its previous super typhoon classification on Monday.
In its advisory on the typhoon, the Malaysian Meteorological Department noted that the storm was observed southwest of Vigan City in the Philippines during the morning.
The typhoon was moving west-northwest at 30 kilometers (18 miles) per hour with peak winds of 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour, according to a state-run news outlet.
