Typhoon Fung-Wong claims two lives in Philippines, moves toward Taiwan

(MENAFN) Typhoon Fung-wong, now weakened, moves over the South China Sea and is forecast to reach Taiwan, following the deaths of two people in the Philippines.

Authorities evacuated around 1.4 million residents before the typhoon made landfall on Luzon’s Aurora province on Sunday, striking with winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) and gusts up to 230 km/h (143 mph). The storm weakened to typhoon strength within hours.

This typhoon follows the earlier devastation from Storm Kalmaegi, which killed nearly 200 people. While some communities remain flooded and isolated, overall damage appears less severe than initially feared.

Residents assessed the aftermath as winds died down by morning. Preparations, including building reinforcements, flight cancellations, and evacuation of low-lying areas, helped reduce casualties compared with past storms like Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.

At shelters, parents cited concern for their children, with one noting, “We felt very worried because of the strength of the typhoon, and we have young children to think of.” Others highlighted the vulnerability of their homes: “Our house is made of wood and flimsy materials.
We live close to the sea so we didn't feel safe.”
