AU Chairperson voices concern over worsening security in Mali

(MENAFN) The African Union has voiced deep concern over the rapidly worsening security situation in Mali, following reports that militant groups have imposed blockades, disrupted essential supplies, and intensified the humanitarian plight for civilians, according to reports.

In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf condemned attacks that have claimed the lives of innocent people and fueled instability across affected areas.

Reaffirming solidarity with Mali’s government and population, Youssouf emphasized the African Union’s ongoing commitment to fostering peace, security, and development throughout the Sahel region.

He also strongly condemned recent kidnappings, including the abduction of three Egyptian nationals, and called for their immediate and unconditional release, stating that such acts “constitute grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.”

Youssouf stressed the need for a “robust, coordinated and coherent international response to counter terrorism and violent extremism in the Sahel,” urging enhanced cooperation, intelligence sharing, and sustained support for the states affected. He reaffirmed the African Union’s readiness to assist Mali and other Sahel nations in their pursuit of stability and peace.

The growing violence by militants linked to ISIS (Daesh) has forced Mali to close schools and universities as the country grapples with overlapping security, power, and humanitarian crises.

Reports indicate that governments including the US, UK, and France have warned their citizens against travel to Mali and urged nationals to leave the country.
