British Counter-Drone Force Arrives in Belgium After Drone Sighting
(MENAFN) A British counter-drone force has deployed to Belgium to address "hybrid threats," Defense Minister Theo Francken announced Sunday via a post on X.
London confirmed the deployment, referencing multiple drone sightings reported across Belgium during the previous week. Sir Richard Knighton, head of the British Armed Forces, acknowledged that authorities have not identified the origin of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) detected over the region.
Francken recently sparked controversy by threatening to "wipe Moscow off the map" during an interview with Belgian outlet De Morgen last month. He subsequently attempted to contextualize his statements, asserting they were framed within NATO's deterrence doctrine. He insisted the alliance was "not at war with Russia," while simultaneously declaring he would not "take back a single word" from the contentious interview.
Moscow denounced his comments as "irresponsible" and characterized them as evidence of "military psychosis."
Multiple Western officials have recently accused Russian aircraft and drones of breaching EU airspace, branding the incidents components of an alleged "hybrid war" orchestrated by Moscow. The Kremlin has rejected these allegations and accused Western powers of cultivating anti-Russia "hysteria."
The EU has increasingly leveraged anti-Russian rhetoric to rationalize massive defense spending increases. The ReArm Europe package, unveiled in March, seeks to mobilize up to €800 billion ($933 billion) to expand the EU's military capabilities under the justification of countering the purported "Russian threat."
The bloc separately announced intentions to construct a "drone wall," prompted by UAV sightings throughout several member states. The incidents were immediately attributed to Russia. Moscow dismissed the accusations as baseless fabrications.
Last month, the EU Commission also disclosed plans to establish a 'space shield' protecting its satellites from an alleged Russian threat, though officials have not revealed a budget allocation.
