Waves Strike Spain’s Tenerife, Claiming Lives
(MENAFN) Three individuals lost their lives, and fifteen others sustained injuries in a series of separate accidents connected to turbulent sea conditions on the Spanish island of Tenerife, according to statements from local emergency authorities.
This tragic situation unfolded as the Canary Islands — a Spanish group of islands that includes Tenerife — remained on high alert due to dangerous coastal conditions.
The most severe incident happened at Roque de las Bodegas beach in Taganana, within the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, when six French visitors were pulled into the ocean by a powerful wave, a news agency reported.
Rescue teams quickly responded, deploying a medical helicopter and two ambulances equipped for basic life support. One woman, who suffered moderate injuries, was flown to Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital.
Four others with minor wounds were also transported to the hospital, while another person received treatment at the scene.
Local police informed a media outlet that the group had been swept away after ignoring a safety barrier that had been installed in the area to warn of hazardous sea conditions.
Throughout the day, other dangerous wave-related episodes occurred along Tenerife’s coastline, causing more injuries and deaths, according to the report.
Officials have appealed to both residents and visitors to stay away from coastal zones until weather and sea conditions return to normal.
