Rodrigo Paz Takes Office as Bolivia’s President

(MENAFN) Rodrigo Paz, a center-right politician who emerged victorious in Bolivia’s presidential runoff on October 19, was officially sworn in on Saturday to lead the country for the 2025-2030 term.

Paz assumed the presidency after receiving the ceremonial sash during a session at Congress in La Paz, the nation’s administrative capital.

Addressing the nation, he criticized previous administrations for leaving behind an economy “in collapse, trapped in inflation and debt.”

He further emphasized, “We inherited a destroyed country. They left us with a collapsed economy, the lowest international reserves in 30 years, inflation, shortages, debt, and insecurity.”

Focusing on Bolivia’s financial turmoil, Paz added, “They left behind unjustifiable fiscal deficits. Corruption has practically become state policy. We are saying enough to ideologies that can no longer put food on the table."

He also declared, “We reject a system that does not respect employment, production, growth, and private property.”

Directing pointed questions at former leaders of the Movement for Socialism (MAS) party, Paz asked rhetorically, “In the presence of international witnesses, the armed forces and the police, I want to ask, where is the gas? Where is the sea of gas you promised? Evo where is the lithium? Arce, where is the gas?” referring to former presidents Evo Morales and Luis Arce.

The inauguration was attended by dignitaries and officials from Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Peru, Brazil, Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.
