Fog Forces Nine Emergency Flight Diversions from Kuwait to Iraq

(MENAFN) Southern Iraq's Basra International Airport received nine emergency flight diversions from Kuwait on Sunday after hazardous weather conditions paralyzed operations at the Gulf nation's primary aviation hub, Iraq's Transportation Ministry confirmed.

Thick fog blanketing Kuwaiti airspace severely compromised visibility, forcing aviation authorities to redirect the aircraft fleet southward, according to an official ministry statement. The emergency landings proceeded without incident, underscoring operational preparedness and crew competence at the Iraqi facility.

Mahmoud Abdul-Sattar, representing the Iraqi Airports Administration, verified to Chinese media that touchdown operations encountered no complications, with all diverted aircraft anticipated to return once meteorological conditions stabilize.

Kuwait's aviation sector returned to standard operations Sunday evening following the weather-induced disruptions, the nation's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced. Spokesperson Abdullah Al-Rajhi from DGCA reported that horizontal visibility plummeted below 100 meters starting approximately 2 a.m. (2300 GMT on Saturday), necessitating protective protocols to safeguard travelers and aviation equipment.

Seasonal fog banks routinely blanket Kuwait throughout winter months, periodically causing operational interruptions at Kuwait International Airport, the nation's principal air transit facility. DGCA officials emphasized ongoing atmospheric surveillance efforts to ensure uninterrupted and secure aviation movement.
