Srinagar- The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch Kashmir has secured the conviction of a former police officer, Sub-Inspector Jagdesh Singh, son of Kartar Singh, resident of Atina, Budgam, in a forgery case related to manipulation of his date of birth to unlawfully extend his service tenure.
The case, registered under FIR No. 32/2013, was investigated under Sections 420, 468, 471, and 201 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC). It originated from a communication received from the Police Headquarters (PHQ) J&K, which indicated that the accused had altered his year of birth from 1957 to 1959 in official records, thereby securing an undue extension of two additional years in service, said a statement.
Investigations conducted by the EOW revealed that Singh had fraudulently modified his date of birth to November 10, 1959, in his official service documents, including his Character Roll and matriculation certificate. This manipulation was aimed at gaining illegal service benefits and delaying his retirement, the statement further added.
ADVERTISEMENTDuring the course of the trial, the prosecution produced several witnesses along with substantial documentary evidence that conclusively established Singh's involvement in the forgery. After a detailed hearing, the Hon'ble Court of City Judge, Srinagar, found the accused guilty under Sections 420, 511, and 468 RPC.
In its judgment, the court sentenced Singh to three years of simple imprisonment and a fine of ₹5,000 under Section 420 read with 511 RPC, and an additional three years of simple imprisonment with a fine of ₹5,000 under Section 468 RPC. In default of payment of fine, he shall undergo an additional six months of simple imprisonment. The court ordered that all sentences shall run concurrently, the statement said.
