Hurricane Melissa Floods Claim Over Seventy Lives in Haiti, Jamaica
(MENAFN) Widespread flooding and landslides triggered by Hurricane Melissa have claimed at least 75 lives across Haiti and Jamaica, local media reported Wednesday.
Since late October, the powerful storm has battered Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba, leaving significant destruction in its wake.
In Haiti, the Civil Protection Directorate confirmed 43 deaths, with seven people still missing. The storm has flooded nearly 12,000 homes and destroyed or damaged hundreds more.
In Jamaica, Prime Minister Andrew Holness reported 32 fatalities and estimated total damages at $6 billion to $7 billion, describing the event as “unprecedented.”
“This is not only a humanitarian crisis but also a severe blow to livelihoods and local economies,” Holness said, highlighting that major tourist areas—including Saint Elizabeth, Westmoreland, and Saint James—suffered the heaviest impacts.
In Cuba, official death figures have not yet been released. However, the UN estimates that roughly 2.2 million people have been affected, with damage reported to approximately 60,000 homes, 461 health centers, and 1,552 schools.
