(MENAFN) Türkiye plans to introduce nine domestically produced electric train sets along with its first homegrown high-speed train next year, as outlined in the 2026 Presidential Annual Program.

The program emphasizes developing rail system vehicles using national resources to increase the domestic content of critical components. It covers research and development (R&D) for local production capabilities, the manufacturing of all rail vehicles and their subcomponents, as well as their maintenance and repair.

Public procurement will support domestic rail production, while design and R&D efforts will be incentivized under the initiative. Turkish railway manufacturer Turasas is leading the design and prototyping of locally produced vehicles to address the sector’s requirements.

The prototype for Türkiye’s first domestically developed high-speed train is designed to reach a top speed of 225 kilometers per hour (140 mph), with completion expected next year.

Additionally, nine national electric train sets capable of speeds up to 160 kph (99 mph) are under development. Turasas is also set to deliver around 30 domestic electric mainline locomotives.

Work on a Co-Co-type locomotive and a railway maintenance vehicle will also conclude in design phase, moving into prototyping soon.

The 2026 program gives priority to rail and maritime transport to reduce environmental impact and costs while improving energy efficiency in logistics and transportation. Increasing the number of electric traction vehicles will further support the ongoing electrification of the railway network.

Turasas has begun establishing a high-speed electric train factory in Sakarya province in northwestern Türkiye. Spanning 15,000 square meters (approximately 161,460 square feet), the facility will have the capacity to produce 12 high-speed train sets annually and is projected to add $83.1 million to the economy each year.
