U.S. Government Shutdown Reaches Longest in History
(MENAFN) The United States government shutdown reached an unprecedented milestone on Wednesday, extending to 36 days without a solution in view, as Republican and Democratic senators remain locked in a standoff over how to restore funding to shuttered federal departments.
This shutdown has now exceeded the earlier 35-day record that occurred during President Donald Trump’s first term, between December 2018 and January 2019.
The record was broken after the Senate on Tuesday voted down, for the 14th time, a House-approved Republican funding proposal aimed at reopening the government.
The legislation did not advance, failing by a vote of 54-44, with no additional Democrats crossing party lines to endorse its progress.
To conclude the shutdown, both political factions in the Senate must forge a compromise that Trump is willing to approve.
The impasse began on October 1, following a collapse in talks over national budget priorities.
Since then, thousands of federal employees have been placed on unpaid leave or have continued to work without compensation, while numerous government operations have been scaled back or temporarily halted.
