Donald Trump Jr. accuses BBC of making fake news about his father
(MENAFN) Donald Trump Jr. has accused the BBC of producing “fake news” following reports that the outlet allegedly altered footage of his father, President Donald Trump, to make it appear as though he was encouraging the January 2021 Capitol rioters.
On Monday, Trump Jr. wrote on X: “FAKE NEWS ‘reporters’ in the UK are just as dishonest and full of s**t as the ones here in America!!!!” His post referred to a report citing an “internal whistle-blowing memo” by a former adviser to the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines and Standards Committee.
The allegations centered on a BBC Panorama episode titled Trump: A Second Chance?, which aired in late October 2024, about a week before the US presidential election. In the broadcast, Trump is seen telling supporters: “We’re gonna walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be there with you and we fight. We fight like hell and if you don’t fight like hell you’re not gonna have a country anymore.”
According to the memo, the footage had been edited, combining statements made roughly 54 minutes apart. The protesters depicted marching toward the Capitol in the segment had actually been filmed before Trump began addressing his audience. The memo also noted that the program gave no indication that the video had been edited or presented out of sequence.
The whistleblower claimed the segment “created the impression that Trump said something he did not and, in doing so, materially misled viewers.” Reports indicated that BBC management “refused to accept there had been a breach of standards.” The episode is currently unavailable.
