Fidan begins official visit to Finland

(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan commenced a visit to Finland on Tuesday, where he is scheduled to meet with his Finnish counterpart, Elina Valtonen.

During his two-day stay in the Nordic country, Fidan will participate in a series of meetings, according to diplomatic sources. In addition to his discussions with Valtonen—whom he previously hosted in Antalya in May at an informal NATO foreign ministers’ gathering—Fidan is expected to meet with Jussi Halla-aho, the speaker of the Finnish parliament.

As part of the visit, Fidan is slated to deliver a speech at the Finnish parliament at an event titled Türkiye–Finland Cooperation. Reports also indicate that he met with the Finnish president and representatives of the Tatar community’s Finnish-Islamic congregation in Helsinki.

Fidan is anticipated to emphasize the importance of strengthening and diversifying Turkish-Finnish relations on the basis of mutual benefits, with a particular focus on trade, investment, and the defense sector. He is expected to highlight Ankara’s willingness to expand cooperation with Helsinki in fields such as information technology, cybersecurity, financial technologies, and renewable energy.

The minister will also stress that joint initiatives in the Arctic region could provide a fresh perspective on bilateral ties, and underline that the connections between Turkish citizens and the Tatar community in Finland reflect strong human links between the two countries.

Fidan is also expected to express gratitude for Finland’s support of Türkiye’s EU membership bid and to convey Ankara’s expectations for advancing Türkiye–EU relations, particularly regarding modernization of the Customs Union and progress in visa liberalization talks.
