Listeria outbreak causes six deaths, hospitalizations cases in US
(MENAFN) A listeria outbreak connected to precooked pasta products has resulted in six deaths and 25 hospitalizations, according to reports from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The outbreak, first reported in June, prompted multiple recalls of ready-to-eat pasta meals containing pasta supplied by Nate’s Fine Foods.
The FDA is working alongside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate the multistate outbreak. "Since the last CDC case count update on September 25, 2025, a total of 7 new illnesses from 3 states have been reported, with 2 additional deaths reported," the agency stated, adding that "one pregnancy-associated illness resulted in a fetal loss."
As of Thursday, 25 of the 27 reported patients had been hospitalized. Cases have been identified across 18 states, including California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.
The recalled products span a variety of precooked pasta meals available at major retailers such as Kroger, Walmart, Albertsons-owned stores, Trader Joe’s, Giant Eagle, and Sprouts. Items include chicken Alfredo, meatball pasta, shrimp scampi bowls, and deli pasta salads.
The FDA has urged consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers for the recalled meals, warning that listeria poses a serious risk, especially to older adults, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and newborns. The infection can lead to fever, muscle aches, neurological symptoms, and, in pregnancy, severe complications including miscarriage or stillbirth.
Listeria is the third-leading cause of foodborne illness deaths in the US, with roughly 1,250 cases and 172 fatalities reported annually, according to public health data.
