China rejects US interference in Nigeria using religion, human rights

(MENAFN) China on Tuesday strongly opposed what it called attempts by the United States to interfere in Nigeria under the guise of “religion and human rights,” following Washington’s warnings of potential military action.

Beijing stated that it “firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries' internal affairs and threatening other countries with sanctions and force,” according to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning. She added, “As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people” along a development path aligned with the nation’s own conditions.

The remarks come after US President Donald Trump threatened military measures against Nigeria over alleged “killing of Christians,” asserting that Christianity faces an “existential threat” in the country and blaming “radical Islamists” for what he described as a “mass slaughter.”
